If a light stopped working a quick squeeze with a pair of pliers would sort it - but normally it was the connector itself - which was resolved with a spray of contact cleaner. I have fitted a towbar to my E60 myself. That was including an OEM removeable Westfalia towbar which doesn't need a bumper cut. Regarding the wiring. The BMW towbar wiring loom will come pre wired so wiring the trailer socket will be a doddle. A bypass relay is required if your car has sensitive electronics E60! A bypass relay takes a signal from each light at the light cluster and then using a relay with a seperate 12V supply from the battery sends the power down the cable to your socket.

If you do fit a bypass relay you wouldn't need to muck about with indicator relays under the bonnet etc. I've just re-wired my car now for a 13 pin electrics so I have a single flip down socket that does the traielr lights and caravan internal electrics should I have to two my dad caravan again.

Sounds like your towbar has come with some form of wiring kit that is complicated to fit into the car. What you need now are the small RED scotch locks from Halfrauds to link each wire feeding the indicators, brake lights, tail lights etc etc to a length of small wire to take the signals to the bypas relay.

I used lengths of wire from my model railway between the light clusters and the bypass relay. As the relay only needs a milliamp or so to work you don't need to use big cable. You then wire the 7 core cable into the bypas relay outlets and away you go.

The bypas relay requires a 15 amp fused supply direct from the battery. I traced each wire to each bulb by removing the rear light bulb holders, switched on the relevant bulbs and followed the metal tracks that take the power from the bulb to the plug so I could identify which colour of wire in the car loom to connect the scotch lock to and hence to the bypas relay.

Now you will have 2 plastic flanged nuts, in some cars these are plastic screws, pic 5A 11 in the tool well, and the 1 screw under the glass latch cover if you couldn't open the glass, plus a few stab-in clips, that are not visible, holding the interior cover on. You can remove the 2 flange nuts and pry the cover away from the gate. You will now have access to all the wire connections, latch and lock switches and motors.

Gate side harness covers are held by 3 screws, 2 under bumpers for the window pic 9A 14 and 1 plastic screw on the side pic 10A Small cover above the harness grommet has a snap in button pic 13A 16 pry in loose. In picture 13A 17 is the defroster cable grommet, you will reuse this. On the gate side there is a positioner for the harness, move the harness aside and you will find two screws pic 14A 18this also has a cover that snaps on 19remove it. On the gateway side the molding has to be removed.

Remove the trim strip across the thresh hole pic 2A 4 screws and 7 retainer plugs. Side molding is held by 2 screws and the weather striping pic 1A 3 and 2 is screw under cover in tie down D ring 3.
